This was shown in this lovely paper, where 102 patients with ruptured ACLs underwent rehabilitation with no surgery. What they found was that more than 80% of these ruptured ACLs had healed..
Now this isn’t saying that surgery is no longer needed. In this same study, those who were of a younger age tended to have more severe injuries and did not see a recovery rate as high as their older counterparts..
Surgical management of ACL ruptured have their place, however it is unfortunate it has taken this long for people to realise that not every torn ACL requires surgery..
