Restrictions after Meniscus repair + exercises after meniscus tear

πŸ“š Every time I read a study, I look for the clinical implications and what can transfer to my patients.

One topic I often discuss is restrictions after meniscus injuries. Both isolated or in combination with ACL injuries.

πŸ” In the recent consensus on meniscus rehabilitation – Part 1, a table was published illustrating the differences in post-surgical restrictions. As shown in the table (pic 2), no consensus was reached on brace use for any surgery type. However, there was consensus on: Weight-bearing, Use of crutches and Range of motion for most surgical procedures.

In the consensus on meniscus rehabilitation – paper Part 2, the results from a 12-week supervised neuromuscular exercise program for traumatic meniscus tears are highlighted (pic 3). The patients who followed this rehab protocol had similar outcomes to those who underwent surgery.

This program includes:

Lower extremity strengthening
Balance training
Hip and core exercises
Patient education

You can see an example of this rehab program in Picture 3.

πŸ—£οΈ I’m curious! Share your experience meniscus surgery restrictions in the comments or message me.
